Why Are First Cars Always Cooler AFTER You Lose Them?

First cars suck! They’re supposed to because you suck (at the time)! That said, why is it that no matter what condition or type of vehicle was your first, that car only gets cooler the longer ago you owned it? Obviously it will always be cool to YOU, but tell people you owned a $400 purple ‘94 Geo Tracker in 2006...not much love. Tell people now though? Instant drinking buddies!

Because you never appreciate what you have until it’s gone.

This was my first car, a 1997 Ford Explorer sport. It wasn’t that great and at times was extremely unreliable, i had it until October of last year. Do I miss it? At times, but I’m kinda gald to have moved on, 9.5 years is enough with a car like that

So yo check it. I use to have a 1988 Dodge aries K. 4 door in champaign.

yeah... still not cool.

Even if I got a 105 MPH speeding ticket which the judge literally laughed at when he read it before he dismissed it, having owned one him self? Him not knowing I did do some non-turbo tinkering with it ofcourse muahahahaha. Does that help make it cool?

still no? well... fine, you’re right...

I loved my first car, an ‘89 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo, but I do not want it back. I wouldn’t mind taking a quick spin in one again for shitsngiggles, but I have zero interest in owning one.

Kinja'd!!!

I wouldn’t mid getting the seats out of one, they were some seriously comfy seats.

Back In The Day(tm) a friend of mine had a mid-80s Pontiac Acadian (Canadian version of the Chevette) which was a long way from new when she was driving it. Objectively, it was crap on a stick, but when you’re young, anything with wheels that moves under its own power comes with a glorious feeling of freedom.

Still, if I could find one now I think I wouldn’t be interested in it for the nostalgia factor as much as I would be curious to take it out on an autocross course. On the one hand, it would make an NA Miata look positively overweight, but on the other hand that engine had all the power of a vigorous mosquito fart.

‘72 Volvo 142S 4M .... Rebuilt one of the carburetors twice, then the other one once. Live and learn.

This is where I shamelessly announce that my first car was a 5-speed 1989 635csi, so it was always cool. Dangerous, cheap, and very rusty. But definitely cool. I hope I’ll be lucky enough to own a nice one at some point.

It’s all nostalgia.

I bought my current new car and still had my old one for a while. I drove the old one after a month or so and couldn’t believe how crappy it was. I still look back on it sometimes with rose colored glasses and have to remind myself how it felt after I drove my new car.

That being said, having an old car around for fun weekend times is the best.

I think we are all acquainted with my first car, my 2012 VW GLI Autobahn in tornado red. I bought it almost 2 years ago now, and despite being an expensive thing to maintain; i’ve loved it. Sure, at times i’ve wanted to push it off a cliff, and at others i’ve cried because of things happening to it (i still want to beat the living fuck out of the retard junior at my school who almost totaled it.....) and in the end i’ve decided that despite being able to buy a bunch of very fast cars for the price, i made the right choice. i love my first car, it’s part of who i am, and even my friends call me “the GLI guy” Heck, i like this ‘hot rodded’ jetta so much i’m looking at getting a classic (mk2) one as a project on the side!
anyway, enough rambling, have some pics of the best first car i could have ever dreamed of.

For sure agree. I got a hand-me down 2003 Honda Odyssey EX-L, it was burgundy red (it matched the rust). A cruise ship handled better then it. Sure it needed a transmission, rear shocks, and other little parts. I miss that damn thing. It was great for bombing down old logging roads. I named it “The Man Van”. I really miss that POS, it had so much space.
